Personal Social Health Education

PSHE including RSE Curriculum at De Bohun

Intent

PSHE at De Bohun delivers a curriculum that embodies our school ethos and values. Our curriculum is accessible to all and maximises the personal development opportunities of every child.  Our intent is that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members within the local and wider community. We aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as learning about rights and responsibilities and respecting what it means to be a member of a culturally diverse community.

Implementation

Our curriculum covers 4 core themes of personal development: Stay Safe, Relationships, Health and well-being and Living in the wider world. Children from Pre-school to Year 6 explore these themes through their weekly PSHE sessions and circle time. Our assemblies and extra-curricular activities further support the personal development of each child, from EYFS to KS2. During assemblies, children are able to discuss current affairs as well as voice their opinions. The children are encouraged to know and understand the importance of British Values and how these support life, living in a diverse society. They develop an appreciation of what being part of a community means, within our school community, the local community and wider society. Our children are able to reflect on ambitions as well as appreciate self-worth and achieve a sense of belonging. Our curriculum is well-sequenced and progressive, allowing children to know more, remember more and understand more. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

Impact

All children understand the importance of PSHE, SMSC, RSE and British Values and how these impact life in and out of school. By the time our children leave De Bohun, they develop personally and socially, having an awareness of theirs and other’s physical and emotional needs and being valued members of society. Our children will have an understanding of economic responsibility and the world in which we live as well as understand the British Values. Our curriculum allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

PSHE education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work. Well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

The national curriculum also states that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice’. PSHE education contributes to schools’ statutory duties outlined in the Education Act 2002 and the Academies Act 2010 to provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum and is essential to Ofsted judgements in relation to personal development, behaviour, welfare and safeguarding. The relationships and health aspects of PSHE education will be compulsory in all schools from 2020.

In June 2019, the Department for Education launched the final statutory guidance to accompany introduction of compulsory health education, relationships education and relationships and sex education (RSE) in 2020.

RSE Education at De Bohun

RSHE stands for Relationships, Sex and Health Education. The focus in primary school is to teach children the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships with particular reference to family, friends and relationships with other children and adults. It includes an understanding of what friendship and family means and how to show respect for others. It also includes the building of healthy online relationships and teaches the children how to ensure relationships are safe.

To develop our policy, we held robust community consultation (RSE Consultation Letter) before final ratification of the policy in September 2020.

Withdrawing

As outlined by the statutory guidance from the DfE, parents do not have the right to withdraw their children from Relationship Education. Parents can request to withdraw their children from Sex Education during primary school.

If you would like to withdraw your child you must write a letter to the Headteacher.
